It acts as the seat of government of Tulsa County, in which the majority of the city lies. Geographically, the city of Tulsa is found in the state’s northeastern portion. It is on the northeast of the Oklahoma City, exactly between the foot of the Ozarks and the Great Plains’ edge. It also has 4.2 square miles of water, bringing a total of 196.8 square miles of city area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city of Tulsa is home to a total population of 393, 987 as of the year 2012. With Tulsa as a principal city, the metropolitan area ranks as the 54th largest MSA in the whole country.

In the 20th century, the city of Tulsa was acclaimed to be the world’s oil capital. This is because the city housed a major oil source and contributed greatly to the American oil industry. In the past, the city’s economy was greatly driven by its oil industry. Since the year 1901, Tulsa remained a leader of natural gas and oil worldwide. Nowadays, there are other major industries that contribute to the progress of Tulsa, such as manufacturing, telecommunications, finance, technology and aerospace.

The first oil well in Tulsa was discovered in a Southwestern community called Red Fork. Red Fork was situated in Tulsa County. The discovery of the oil well, which was named Sue A. Bland, led to the start of the oil industry. Another well was discovered in Glen Pool in the year 1905, and it was said to be the largest oil well in the whole world to be recorded at that time.

After the lucky strike at Glen Pool, oil-related companies started establishing headquarters in the city of Tulsa, including SemGroup, Syntroleum, Samson and Excel Energy, ONEOK and William Companies among others. In the 21st century, the city of Tulsa remains to be a major center of natural gas and oil industries.
