The Historic Savannah

Savannah is the county seat of Chatham County and this is the oldest city I the state of Georgia. The city was established in 1733. The city later became the first capital in the state of Georgia. The city is a strategic port city during the American Civil War and the American Revolution. With the city’s set up, it has become an industrial center today. Moreover, it has become a vital Atlantic seaport.

The oldest antebellum rail facility in the US, the Central Georgia Railway, is in Savannah as well. The largest National Historic Landmarks Districts in America can be found in Savannah. The districts include the Savannah Victorian Historic District, Savannah Historic District and the park-like squares. The United States government in the year 1966 designated the districts. There are many things old and historic in Savannah. Both locals and tourists frequently visit the historical sites in the city.

Aside from the rich history of the city, the city offers access to several coastal islands. The Savannah Riverfront is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the city. You can also visit Savannah Beach or the Tybee Island while in the city. This is the site of the first lighthouse on the southern coast, the Light Station in the Tybee Island.
