Rockford, the County Seat of Winnebago County, Illinois, is a city located on the banks of the Rock River. Rockford was named Rockford because it was such an excellent ford found just right across the Rock River. It was also called “The Forest City” because the city was well known throughout the state for its piles of beautiful elm trees. Although these elm trees were wiped out during the 1950’s, Rockford still had piles of big trees.
