Thoroughbred Racing in Louisville, Kentucky

In the U.S. state of Kentucky, the city of Louisville can be found. Louisville is labeled as a consolidated city- county, which means that it has the responsibilities of both governments. Louisville is considered to be the largest city in the state in terms of population count. Located in the Jefferson County, Louisville lies along the banks of the Gulf of Mexico and the Ohio River. It is also near the Falls of the Ohio, which is a major obstruction between the two rivers. Another landmark for the city is the state borders of Indiana and Kentucky, where in the city of Louisville is on the state’s southeastern portion. In terms of geography, the city is also considered as one of the southernmost Northern cities or vice versa. The Kentucky Derby is held annually in the city and attracts thousands of tourists statewide and nationwide. The Kentucky Derby is a stakes race that is known to involve thoroughbreds only. A thoroughbred horse is a breed that is favored in racing. They are often used for racing and equestrian sports.

The Grade I race is indeed the most prestigious among the many thoroughbred races in the whole United States. Since its beginning in 1875, Kentucky Derby Festival has become a two- week event to accommodate the races in the competition. It is usually held on the first Saturday of May. In addition, the Kentucky Derby Festival held in Louisville is the first leg in the country’s Triple Crown, a U.S. annual event that features racing series of 3-year old thoroughbreds in the western hemisphere.
