Meaning of City Name:

The river that Fall River refers to is the Quequechan River. Quequechan is a Wampanoag name believed to mean "Falling River" or "Leaping/Falling Waters." The city is named after the falls that once were visible on the river, as there were once multiple smaller waterfalls and one larger waterfall leading to where Battleship Cove currently is, under the Braga Bridge.

Fall River: The Scholarship City

The city of Fall River can be found in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. Statewide, Fall River is considered as the 10th largest city. Geographically, the city lies by the banks of Mount Hope Bay’s eastern shore. It is near the Taunton River’s mouth, which is made from the confluence of Maltfield River and Town River in Massachusetts. Fall River’s greater portion is situated on the hillsides, while the rest is on the level table-land. The total area of Fall River is 40.2 square miles. Only 17.68% of the total area is water. It was also noted that the city was the only one to have had a waterfall as part of the downtown area, as far as the United States east coast is concerned. According to the United States Census Bureau, the total population of Fall River is 88, 857 as of 2010.

The city is indeed a place with many points of interest. In terms of global recognition, there is the Battleship Cove, which is described to be the largest and historic naval ship show in the whole world. The nonprofit maritime museum showcases the USS Massachusetts and other war memorial from the World War II. The Fall River Heritage State Park and the Old Colony & Fall River Railroad Museum are also tourist destinations for history and nature lovers. Fall River is notably distinguished for being the Scholarship City. It began in 1958 when D. Irving Fradkin started the Dollars for Scholars. Dr. Fradkin is a native of Fall River, and began the organization in his hometown. Through the years, the organization got a new name. Today, the Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of America or Scholarship America is one of the philanthropic organizations in the United States that is widely recognized for their civic contributions. They focus on their goal, which is to assist various individuals, communities, corporations and foundations with managing and awarding scholarships, as well as fundraising for the benefit of the students.

Dollar for Scholars became a main division, which prioritizes the local scholarship organizations throughout the U.S. The initiatives of Scholarship America include Dreamkeepers Emergency Financial Aid Program and the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund among others.
