Vancouver: Downtown Revitalization in Progress

Vancouver is one of the cities situated within the boundaries of the U.S. state of Washington. Geographically, the city of Vancouver is found in Clark County, of which it functions as the seat of government. By the Columbia River, the city sits in the northern bank, exactly on the west side of the confluence of the Cascade Range and Columbia River Gorge. Specifically, the city is in the Western Lowlands region of the state. There are a few sights that can be seen from the city, including the Mount Saint Helens, Mount Adams, Mount Hood and Coast Range among others. The city has a total area of 49.83 square miles, of which 46.46 square miles are land while the remaining 3.40 square miles are water.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city of Vancouver is home to a total population of 161, 791 as of 2010. However, the Census Bureau reported an estimate of 165, 489 in 2012. The city ranks the 4th largest city in the state of Washington and the 145th largest city in the whole United States in terms of population. Furthermore, Vancouver is part of the greater Portland-Vancouver Metropolitan Area, which is the 24th largest MSA in the country, with a total population of 2, 289, 800 as of 2012.

The city of Vancouver has accumulated a list of nicknames through the years. The most well-known among the many are “The Couve” and “Vantucky”. However, the city is still making progress in terms of infrastructure and tourism. In order to match its counterpart city in Canada, the city government of Vancouver in Washington strives to dedicate a maximum of 15 years for the revitalization of the downtown area. The redevelopment will focus on the core of the downtown, in which there are already a number of existing infrastructures ready to be improved. In the early 2000s, the construction had started with tall condominium structures. However, the biggest investment is a Hilton Hotel which will be situated in front of the Esther Short Park. A new shopping mall is also being constructed.

The redevelopment will not stop when the 15-year project is finished. The city government plans to add a new library square, waterfront development, modern plaza and condominiums along the downtown core in order to accommodate the growing population of Vancouver. Furthermore, a new Marriott hotel is being planned to boost the tourism advantage of the city of Vancouver.
