Quincy – The City of Presidents and the Brave
Quincy is a city located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. This city’s nickname is the ‘City of Presidents.’ Quincy is the birthplace of the former US Presidents John Quincy Adams and John Adams. In addition, this is also the birthplace of the political leader John Hancock. John Hancock is the longest serving president of the continental congress. The city got its name after Colonel John Quincy.
The city has several statues and monuments to behold. In fact, these monuments are among the top tourist attractions in the city. At the City Hall Plaza, a life sized bronze statue of John Adams stands. This monument was dedicated in 2001 and Lloyd Lillie designed this. This is the ‘Atlas of Independence.’ Another statue of John Adams can be located at the Freedom Park in the Burgin Parkway. Another monument that is famous in the city is the Abigail Adams and John Quincy Adams monument. This is located next to the United First Parish Church. Lloyd Lillie also designed this. This monument depicts Abigail and his son when they witnessed the burning of the Charlestown and the battle of the Bunker Hill. A stone cairn located that the Penn’s Hill is also famous. This marks the spot where the young John and his mother, Abigail, watched the burning of Charlestown.
The Granite Ball is another famed tourist spot in the city. This was crafted in 1925. This ball was a present from the Granite Manufacturers Association to Quincy. This was given during the 300th anniversary of the city. This granite ball measures 6 feet in diameter and weighs about 9.5 tons. The Doughboy statue is another go to site in the city. This is situated in from of the Adams Academy. This was erected to honor the men who served during the World War from 1917 to 1918. The men and women who served the World War II are also honored through the erection of the World War II memorial statue. This memorial statue is located in front of the city hall.
Another monument was erected to honor those who fought in the fiercest battles of World War II. This monument is located at the McIntyre Mall. The monument is known as the Battle of the Bulge monument. Even the Korean War Veterans are honored in the city. A Korean War Veteran Memorial was created at the street corner of the Hancock Street and the Southern Artery. This memorial features a little courtyard with some benches. The memorial highlights the 38 Quincy men who gave up their lives during the Korean War.
