The city of Pittsburgh is among the many cities located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. Geographically, the city is situated in the Allegheny County, of which it functions as the seat of government. Specifically, the city sits on the Allegheny Plateau which is located in the Western Allegheny Plateau’s eco-region. The downtown area of Pittsburgh is along the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River, which forms part of the Ohio River. In terms of land area, the city of Pittsburgh has a total of 58.3 square miles, of which 55.6 square miles are land, while the rest (2.8 square miles) is water.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city of Pittsburgh is home to a total population of 306, 211 as of 2010. Pittsburgh is considered as the 2nd most populous city in the state of Pennsylvania and the 62nd most populous city in the whole country. The city is also part of the Greater Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area, which has a total population of 2, 360, 733. It currently ranks as the 22nd largest MSA in the country.

The city of Pittsburgh is home to two major health care providers in the area. The first is is the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, or the so-called UPMC, which was established in 1893, and the second is the West Penn Allegheny Health System which had been present since 1882. These two are constantly ranked as some of the best medical providers in the whole country. In fact, the UPMC is a constant name in the “Honor Roll” compiled by the U.S. News and World Reports since 2000.

In terms of health care development, the city of Pittsburgh is known nationally for hosting the first ever “Mercy Hospital” in the whole world. It was a military hospital, the first one established in the history of the United States. Named as the General Edward Hand Hospital, it was also the first military center for medical care in the West Atlantic Plain. It had served the state from 1777 to 1845. Among those that followed were the Allegheny General Hospital, University of Pittsburgh Medical School, Magee Women’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital among others.

In the history of America, the Allegheny General Hospital was one of the first centers to administer Cobalt Therapy, a treatment for cancer and other conditions. UPMC was the first hospital to host early transplants, such as the cross species marrow transplant, in the world. In terms of medical technology and health information, the city of Pittsburgh has done a lot of developments.
