There are two cities named Peoria in the United States. One is the city in the U.S. state of Arizona, while the other is within the boundaries of the U.S. state of Illinois. Geographically, the city of Peoria is located in the Peoria County, of which it functions as the seat of government. Peoria is nestled between the Illinois River, Barton Ville and West Peoria, a newly- established city. It was said that the city has expansion plans to the northwest, encompassing the unofficial portion of the village of Dunlap. The 2010 report submitted by the Census Bureau justifies that the city of Peoria has an area of 50.23 square miles, of which 48.01 square miles are land and the rest is water.
In terms of population, the city of Peoria ranks as the 7th most populous city in the state of Illinois. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city is home to an estimated of population of 119, 698 as of the year 2012. The figures include the population of Far Northern Peoria. In addition, the city is part of the greater Peoria Metropolitan Statistical Area that has a population of 373, 590.
The economy of Peoria is home to a wide range of industries. Among these industries are glucose factories, carriage factories, furniture makers, wholesale warehousing, casting foundries, pottery makers and ice harvesting industries. The boom of the economy started when the city became a world leader for distilleries. During the 1980s, there are a total of 22 distilleries and multiple breweries within the city’s borders. The city is known to produce the highest internal revenue tax on alcohol among the single revenue districts in the country.
Following the brewery industry, the manufacturing industry became a major player in producing farm machinery. Some of the dominant companies include the Kingman Plow Co., Avery Manufacturing Co., Acme Harvester Co., and Selby Starr & Co. Peoria is also home to the Keystone Steel & Wire, which developed the nation’s first wire fence. The company had been the leading manufacturer through the 1980s. Under the manufacturing industry, the Rouse Hazard Co. started importing bicycles and auto accessories around the world. The cycle manufacturer, Charles Duryea, was the first to develop a gasoline-powered automobile and offered it commercially in the U.S. The world headquarters of Caterpillar and Maui Jim are also situated in the city.
Retail is also a major industry in Peoria. The city is home to the Northwoods Malls, Willow Knolls Court, The Shoppes, Metro Centre, Bergner’s, Walmart and Sheridan Village.
