Tampa: The Big Guava in America

The city of Tampa is one of the cities situated in the U.S. state of Florida. Geographically, it is located in the Hillsborough County, of which it functions as the seat of government. The city of Tampa is located along the banks of Tampa Bay, which is on the west coast of the state of Florida. It is also near the Gulf of Mexico, wherein the water of Tampa Bay flows. The city of Tampa has a total area of 170.6 square miles, of which 112.1 square miles are land while the other 58.5 square miles are covered in water. In addition, the two bodies of water, namely Hillsborough Bay and Old Tampa Bay, act as the borders of the city of Tampa.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city of Tampa is home to a total population of 347, 645 citizens. The city currently ranks as the 53rd most populous city in the United States. Furthermore, the city is part of the greater Tampa- St. Petersburg- Clearwater Metropolitan Area, which has a total population of 2, 824, 724. Tampa was incorporated as a village in 1849, a town in 1873 and finally, a city in 1887. Its nicknames include The Big Guava and Cigar City.

The most famous nickname of the city of Tampa is The Big Guava. Steve Otto, a newspaper columnist was the one to coin the nickname while he was still writing for two newspapers, namely the Tampa Times (now defunct) and Tampa Tribune. Contrary to speculations about the origin of the nickname, The Big Guava is not a result of the mass production of guavas in the city. The Tampa Bay area is unfortunately vulnerable to freezing temperature, which made growing of tropical trees, like guavas, difficult. The nickname was inspired by New York City’s own moniker, “Big Apple”, and the crucial contribution of Gavino Gutierrez.

As a businessman, Gutierrez worked for a company that processed tropical fruits. He heard a rumor about the growth of wild guava trees in the Tampa Bay Area, and decided to visit the city of Tampa to find a new product source for his firm. Unfortunately, the rumor was false. Nonetheless, the arrival of Gutierrez led the way to great economic progress. Impressed by the economy of Tampa, Gutierrez recommended the area to a friend named Vicente Martinez-Ybor, who owned Key West, a major cigar company. Ybor was searching for a good place to move his manufacturing company, and he trusted Gutierrez’s assessment. The rise of the cigar industry was great for the city of Tampa, and it has put the place on the world map ever since.
