Providence: The Creative Capital of the U.S.
The city of Providence is one of the many cities situated within the borders of the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It is the state capital of Rhode Island and one of the country’s oldest cities. Geographically, the city of Providence is located in the Providence County, of which it is the seat of government and the largest city in terms of population. The city can be found along the banks of the Providence River, specifically at the Narragansett Bay’s head. The Providence River courses through the city, and forms the confluence of two rivers, namely the Woonasquatucket River and Moshassuck River. According to the 2010 Census Bureau, the city of Providence has a total area of 20.5 square miles, of which 18.5 square miles is land and the 2.1 square miles of the remaining area is water.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Providence is home to a total population of 182, 911 as of the year 2010. It currently ranks as the most populous city in the state and county and 3rd most populous city in the region called New England. In addition, the city is part of the Providence Metropolitan Area, which has a population of 1, 630, 956 as of 2010. The MSA is the 37th largest in the whole country.
The city of Providence was given many nicknames in the past. It has been called the “Beehive of Industry”, “The Divine City” and the “Creative Capital”. The last nickname was created by the city government in order to highlight its arts community and educational resources. Aside from its economy, Providence is indeed a well-known area because it is where the Brown University can be located. The Brown University is part of the 8-member Ivy League organization. Ivy League is an athletic conference made up of collegiate organizations with sports teams. The Ivy League is made up of 8 private universities that provide higher education. Aside from sports, members of this prestigious university are known for their social elitism and academic excellence. As a research University, Brown offers different courses in medicine, physical sciences, humanities and social sciences. It is also the country’s 7th oldest university.
In terms of art and culture, the city is home to a number of arts associations and venues for creative output. Performing arts are given utmost priority, with associations such as the Trinity Repertory Company, Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and Providence Black Repertory Company within its borders.
