Pasadena: The World’s Strawberry Capital

Pasadena is among the many cities located within the borders of the U.S. state of Texas. Geographically, the city of Pasadena is located in Harris County, wherein it is bordered by the Houston Ship Channel to the North. The city’s southeastern part is adjacent to the Galveston Bay, an estuary in the state’s upper coast. According to the Census Bureau report, the city of Pasadena encompasses a total area of 44.5 square miles. 44.2 square miles are made of land, while 0.4 square miles are made of water. The city is also known as the backdrop for the 1980 hit movie called the Urban Cowboy, specifically in Gilley, a bar within the city. One of the city’s annual festivals is the Strawberry Festival. The festival began to commemorate the time when the humble city of Pasadena acquired global attention. The city is known to be the Strawberry Capital of the World for its wide strawberry plantations that could fill 28 trains in a day. The plantation started when a philanthropist named Clara Barton bought 1.5 million plants of strawberries and sent all of them to the city of Pasadena. Barton was a member of the American Red Cross and she decided to help the flood victims in the 19th century to get back to their normal lives. In the 1930s, the strawberry crops flourished and news started circulating all over Texas about a new strawberry supplier. Currently, the Strawberry Festival has a total of 56,000 attendants in the year 2008 alone.
