New Bedford: One of America’s Whaling Cities

The city of New Bedford can be found within the borders of the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The city is part of the Bristol County, of which it is the largest city in terms of population. Geographically, the city is considered to be a coastal one or a seaport because it is surrounded by an abundance of water resources, such as the Buzzards Bay, Acushnet River and the New Bedford Harbor, which is shared with the town of Fairhaven. The city of New Bedford is bordered by Freetown on the north, Fairhaven and Acushnet on the east, Buzzards Bay on the south and Dartmouth on the west. According to the Census report, New Bedford has an area of 24.1 square miles; of which 20 square miles are land while the other 4.1 square miles are water.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city is home to a population of 95, 115 as of the year 2011. It currently ranks as the 6th most populous city in the whole state of Massachusetts. In addition, the city of New Bedford is also one of the three largest cities in the state’s South Coast region. The other two cities is Taunton, the seat of government of Bristol county, and Fall River.

One of the nicknames that are brought to mind once the city of New Bedford was mentioned is “Whaling City”. As a major commercial fishing port of America, the city contributed to the history of the whaling industry. It started when New Bedford was still a fishing village. Since the foreign trade port was successful, the village turned into a commercial zone, which focuses on the trade and whaling industries. With the help of whaling merchants from other parts of the country, New Bedford gained a reputation. One of the most famous is Joseph Rotch, who moved to the mainland of New Bedford and started his whale oil manufacturing business. Since the whaling businesses in Nantucket are also doing well, New Bedford and Nantucket dominated the industry. However, the invention of a toggling harpoon by a New Bedford native named Lewis Temple revolutionized the whaling industry; thus, making the city more powerful in terms of catching whales. Using steel for the construction of whaling ships was also another factor in New Bedford’s success. Since the production of whaling products, specifically whale oil, the city of New Bedford had become one of the world’s richest per capital.
