The U.S. state of Michigan has the city of Lansing as its state capital. Geographically, the city can be located in the Ingham County, but a small portion extends to the neighboring Eaton County. The city of Lansing is right in the central region of Michigan, or the so-called Mid-Michigan. It sits along the southern part of the Lower Peninsula, where the confluence of the Red Cedar River and Grand River can be found. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Lansing has a total area of 36.68 square miles, of which 36.05 are land and the other 0.63 square miles are water. The total population of Lansing reached 114, 297 in the year 2010, which makes it the 6th largest city in the whole state of Michigan. The city is also part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical area with a population of 464, 036, and the Combined Statistical Area, including the neighboring Shiawassee County, with 534, 684 residents.

The economy of Lansing is thriving due to the number of industries within its central district. The major economic drivers are healthcare, education, insurance, government and automobile manufacturing. Since the city of Lansing is a state capital of Michigan, the workers of the state government are in the area, contributing to the entire workforce of the city.
