Fayetteville: A Significant Area for the U.S. Army

The city of Fayetteville is located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is considered the seat of government of Cumberland County. Geographically, the city lies in the Coastal Plain Region along the banks of the Cape Fear River. It is specifically in the Sandhills, which is on the region’s western end. According to the Census Bureau, Fayetteville holds a total area of 58.8 square miles. Only 1.2 square miles is water and the rest is land. The United States Census Bureau estimated the population in the city to be 205, 678 as of the year 2011. It ranks as the state’s 6th largest municipality. In addition, the city is also part of the larger Fayetteville metropolitan area. The MSA consists of the Cumber land county and the Hoke County, including suburban areas like the Pope Field, Stedman, Spring Lake, Fort Bragg, Hope Mills RockFish, Eastover and Raeford. This fact justifies its rank as the largest MSA in the southeastern North Carolina, and also the 5th largest MSA in the whole state. According to the Census Bureau, the MSA has a total population of 374, 157.

The city of Fayetteville has been awarded with numerous distinctions in the past. It was a three-time winner of the All-America City Award given by the National Civic League. This award considers strict criteria, such as the effectiveness, transparency and openness of the city’s local government. Such achievement led the city government to nickname Fayetteville as the “All-America City”. The city is also known as a center of education, since it is the home of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville State University, Antebellum Arkansans College and the Fayetteville Female Seminary. However, the first thing that comes to people’s minds when the city is mentioned is the Fort Bragg.

Fort Bragg is considered as the United States Army’s largest installation. It is mostly located within the borders of Fayetteville but it extends to other counties, such as the Hoke, Harnett, Cumberland and Moore, as well. Fort Bragg has a total of 251 square miles and houses the U.S. Army Forces Command, U.S. Army Reserve Command and the US Army airborne forces. According to the 2010 Census, the area has a population of 39, 457 residents. Fort Bragg is established in 1918 and served as a training ground for artilleries. Nowadays, it is home to different airborne units, such as the 82nd Airborne Division, United Sates Army Special Operations Command and XVIII Airborne Division.
