Economy and Education: The Strengths of Albany

Albany, the capital city of New York is the seat of government of the Albany County. It is geographically located north of the so-called Big Apple, the famous New York City. The city of Albany is conveniently located along the west bank of the Hudson River, which is just south from where the Mohawk River meets the Hudson River. According to the 2010 census, Albany has a population of 97, 856 at the time. The city also established close ties with nearby metropolitan cities, such as Saratoga Springs, Troy and Schenectady. These four cities in the U.S. state of New York form the so-called Capital District, a region that encompasses the (MSA) or the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. With the MSA’s recorded population of 870, 716, it is considered the 4th largest metropolitan area in the state of New York and the 58th largest in the U.S.

The flourishing economy of the city of Albany, as well as the Albany-Schenectady area, allows people to accomplish opportunities and be successful in their chosen professions. As proof of this, the annual listing of Forbes Magazine in 2012 named the Albany-Schenectady area as the 4th Best City for Jobs in the United States. The economy of Albany is heavily relying on the healthcare industry, education (the city ranked 1st in Forbes’ IQ Campuses 2006 list) and government. Albany has steady foundations of the three, which is why the city is moderately immune to the past economic recessions. About 25% of the city’s workforce are working government-related job. Another growing sector in Albany is the high-tech industry due to the fact that the city is located at the center of the so-called Tech Valley, as branded by the New York state.

Albany is also proud to be the home of some of the finest educational institutions in the country, such as the Albany Medical College, the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the New York State Normal School. Both private and public academic establishments satisfy the need of students for knowledge and skill sets. In 2006, the Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering is named as the best college for micro and nanotechnology education. With the recognition, the city of Albany is on its way to be named as the U.S. leader of nanotechnology in the future.

The city is indeed a thriving business community, but it is balanced with top quality retail and fine dining, year-round activities for the outdoors and world-class entertainment. Some of the best attractions are the Baseball Hall of Fame, Lake Placid and the rustic city of Saratoga Springs.
